I'm a mathematician by trade. I teach the craft at Oxford University, where I also do pure maths research. Stumbleupon is fun, but potentially a huge time drain, so I try to use it in moderation!

Why do I keep coming upon so many articles trashing the idea of university education? Perhaps if you go to a crappy university and undertake a degree in some bullshit subject then it might not be worth your money, perhaps. But from my own experience at some of the better universities in Britain, I can unequivocally state that neither myself nor my colleagues could have gotten where we are today without having had a first-rate education. OK, so I studied a science subject (mathematics), and the author seems to be happy with the sciences, but I really do believe that a good education in one of the traditional humanities (including History, Classics, English, Philosophy, etc.) does help one think more clearly. Which can't be a bad thing.
